Yet another foreign material
has been developed as an attempt to enlarge female breasts easily - with a
syringe. 'Amazing' supposedly refers to the immediate results: breasts are
enlarged in an amazingly beautiful and easy way. Long-term results are,
however, amazingly disastrous.
The substance is Polyacrylamide gel (PAAG). According to Professor Milanov
from the Russian Academy of Medical Science, PAAG was widely used in Russia
for 'underground' breast enlargement, long before it was officially tested
for human application. In his statement, published in the official journal
"Annals of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery" 3/2000, Milonow
writes about the "breast gel syndrom" as a new disease caused by the
physicians themselves ("new nosologic form of iatrogenic origin"). Breast
enlargement by means of PAAG, he continues, is not recommendable as opposed
to its application in cases of leg deformities.
The international journal "Aesthetic Plastic Surgery" IX-X 2002 published a
scientific paper by N.-x. Cheng and several colleagues on the treatment of
12 patients in Gwangzhon, China after breast enlargement with
PAAG-injections in other clinics. The substance was named "Interfall" and
imported from the Ukraine (Ukraine Interfall Co. Ltd.). In 1997 it received
official approval for medical operations from the State Drug Administration
(SDA). Patients complained about hardenings, lumps, milk secretion,
hematoma, permanent pain in the breast and deformation of the breast.
Patients were 16-38 years old and had to undergo surgical treatment: PAAG
had to be eliminated to the best possible extent and, in some cases, the
whole breast had to be removed.
Dr. Susumu Tokayanagi, member of ISAPS's Public Education Committee
(International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery), answered a query by
another Committee member concerning "Amazing Gel" as follows:
"I think of it as a very dangerous substance. Nothing has ever been safe in
the history of injectables. Especially in Japan, many injectables have been
used and we have, either immediately or sometimes a few years later,
detected skin ulcerations, cysts, granuloma, redness and hardenings of the
skin, lung embolia, sometimes even with a fatal end. I am afraid we can
expect the same from PAAG."
In the early 1960, several thousand women in Las Vegas underwent breast
enlargement operations by means of silicone fluid. The results were
disastrous: many women's breast had to be amputated. It is simply too naïve
to believe that by injecting foreign substances to the breast, they can be
blown up like a balloon without major risks. Furthermore, we have the case
of the unlucky Berlin surgeon called Meyburg who attempted to conduct a
breast enlargement operation by using dead corpses' fat. That was almost 50
years ago. When he became aware of the disastrous consequences of his tests,
he decided to take his life. Although: "history teaches us that it has not
taught us anything."
