DEFINITION of the SPECIALTY
Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery is a specialty concerned
with acute and non-acute conditions which may be congenital or acquired as
a result of trauma, disease, degeneration or ageing in patients of both
sexes and all ages. Its aim is the restoration or improvement of function
and the normalisation of appearance and well-being.
The SYLLABUS of PLASTIC SURGERY
The plastic surgeon must have acquired and must maintain specialised
knowledge relating to the diagnosis, pre-operative, operative and
post-operative management and reconstruction where appropriate in the
following areas of primary responsibility:
HEAD AND NECK 1. Facial trauma, 2. Orthognatic surgery, 3. TMJ
disorders, 4. Craniofacial surgery, 5. Cleft lip and palate, 6. Lip and
upper aero-digestive cancer, 7. Facial bone tumours, 8. Salivary gland, 9.
Ear, 10. Nose, 11. Eyelids, 12. Congenital/acquired neck anomalies,
13.Scalp reconstruction, 14. Facial palsy, 15. Other head and neck
procedures
BREAST 1. Breast mound reconstruction, 2. Nipple-areola complex
reconstruction, 3. Revisional surgery for breast reconstruction, 4.
Glandulectomy for gynecomastia with/without liposuction, 5. Other breast
procedures
TRUNK AND ABDOMEN 1. Mediastinitis, chest wall and trunk
reconstruction, 2. Pectus excavatum/carinatum, 3. Poland syndrome, 4.
Spina bifida, 5. Axillary reconstruction, 6. Axillary node dissection, 7.
Abdominal wall reconstruction, 8. Other trunk-abdomen procedures
HAND AND UPPER EXTREMITIES 1. Tendon surgery, 2. Fractures and
dislocations, 3. Arthrodesis and arthroplasty, 4. Peripheral nerve surgery,
