ISAPS - Statistics 2001

International Statistics for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Procedures

The Media Center & ISAPS Public Edeucation Committee. Our function is to "render advice to the membership with respect to appearances and publications in the media and to generally supervise and carry out the Public Education Program of the Society, as directed by the Executive Committee."

As we know the ethics on public education vary a lot from country to country. The methods used in one country to educate the public might not be acceptable in another. I have been contacting ISAPS National Secretaries to obtain their input, feel their needs and try to help them as much as we can.

The work is divided in two parts: 1- The Public Education part involves contacts with Doctors, members of ISAPS, gathering and providing information. 2- The Media Center involves contact with the international media, helping them with articles on plastic surgery and providing statistics and data. In the last months we had articles published with our members on Time magazine, aired at the BBC, NBC and many others. We have worked together with the Website Committee, where all the information is readily available. This page also provides a centralized contact with journalists that have their questions directed to the member of the specific area.

Last year we presented the first International Statistics for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Procedures - which we collected from the ISAPS members in 20 countries. The Statistic for 2000 can still be reached at: ISAPS 2000 STATISTICS. The numbers and graphics have been sent to every ISAPS member who requested them for their lectures.

This year we have sent 3 mailings to all the 850 members and also sent 3 emails with the questionnaire for the 2001 numbers. The questionnaire was in our newsletter and in the folders of the Istanbul congress attendees. The response was still not as numerous as we would want, but it was better than last year. The new ISAPS 2001 Statistics and the comparison with the 2000 numbers are now available. As in last year we stipulated a correction factor for each country, according to the number of replies and the number of ISAPS members in that country, and used it to correct the results. We still need a higher percentage of replies to give a truer picture of the ISAPS statistics.

Highlights of the ISAPS 2001 Statistics

This year we had surgeons from 30 countries replying to our questionnaire, as opposed to 20 countries in 2000. Because of this bigger number of countries the percentages of participation from each country is lower this year.

The USA continues to be in first place in the world by number of procedures (21% of the world's plastic surgery) performed by ISAPS members. Brazil is second (14%) and Mexico third (8%). The UK, which was third in 2000, did not have any replies in 2001.

As this is the second year of our questionnaire we can now compare numbers. Techniques that became more or less popular, the introduction of a new item - Scar Revision - which our surgeons thought was pertinent, and is already number 1 procedure for males. Collagen Injection was the #1 procedure for women. Lipoplasty is still the #1 surgical procedure, followed by Breast Augmentation and Blepharoplasty.

Females are 87.35 % of the international aesthetic plastic surgery patients and male patients 12.65%. In Finland, Japan and Korea more than 25% of the patients are male.

Internationally 62.86% of aesthetic surgery patients are between 21 and 50 years old. Russia has the highest percentage of teen-age patients (20 years old and younger), 40%, followed by Mexico (32.42%) and Chile the lowest, 4.67%. Japan has the highest percentage of older patients (51 years old and older), 33.28% and Jordan the lowest, 9.25%.
