In April
1992, the use of silicone breasts in plastic surgery became illegal in the
USA. The moratorium was imposed by the very strict Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) for reasons of lacking scientific evidence on the risks
of silicone breasts to patients‘ health.
Meanwhile
sufficient evidence exists to prove that silicone itself does not cause
damage. There have also been studies analysing the disadvantageous results
of artificial limbs filled with salt-solution which ‚gurgle‘ if they leak.

On the 14.
and 15.October 2003, the FDA organised a council of experts for a roundtable
discussion. The ASAPS and the ASERF were represented by Dr. Larie Casas, Dr.
Leroy Young, Dr. Mark Jewell. The FDA gremium decided (9 against 6 votes) in
favour of legalising the use of silicone-filled artificial
breasts for the US markets after 12 years of absence. It remains to be seen
whether a final resolution will follow.
While Germany
organises Miss-Silicone-contests – for example at the Cologne disco „Palm
Beach“ –, American women still need to travel abroad if they want silicone
prosthetic breasts.
