The German league put up a
good show at the last World congress in Sydney. While Munich lost the bid
(by only four votes) for hosting the world congress 2003 to Sydney (one of
the most beautiful cities on the planet), Berlin won the bid for 2007.
Despite a strong competition: Singapore, Florence, Athens...
It has to be said that in
the 18th, the 19th, and in the early 20th century, many great plastic
surgeons came from Germany. Many of those pioneers have given new life to
plastic surgery and epoch-making discoveries and technology to the world.
Thus the honour of hosting the world congress can be seen as a result of
those achievements.
This century's plastic
surgeons from Germany were very active in Sydney. 25 participants, four
round table experts on the podium, some offered workshops, many of them gave
scientific talks. (Compared to only 7 participants from Italy to support
Florence as a candidate.)
The candidate cities'
presentations were not flashy but rather had a nostalgic-friendly touch. The
football world championships will be held in Germany in 2006. We, Germany's
plastic surgeons, have less ambitious aims. We do not have to win the world
cup. We will be happy if we perform well as hosts to our guests.
